Spain · Almería · Vera
Vera Playa is the seaside district of Vera, a town of about 20,300 people on Almería's Levante coast: roughly five kilometres of beaches, about 8 km by road from the old town, backed mainly by apartment and townhouse complexes. Naturism is confined to the northern stretch of El Playazo beach, and non-residents made 54% of recent home purchases in Vera, according to the notaries' figures.

See what fits →Old Vera sits inland on a plain. An earthquake destroyed the earlier hilltop town on 9 November 1518, and the new one was laid out nearby on a square plan around a parish church built to double as a fortress, as the town hall's history pages record. It remains the everyday centre, with the town hall, shops and services.
Vera Playa is the municipality's stretch of coast, about 8 km by road from the Plaza Mayor. The town hall lists four beaches along roughly five kilometres: Las Marinas-Bolaga, a broad urban beach of fine sand; Puerto Rey, quieter and popular with families; El Playazo, a long run of golden sand; and Cala Marqués, a small cove among rocks.
| Vera town | Vera Playa | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Inland plain, under 100 m above sea level | About 5 km of sandy beaches and one rocky cove |
| To the beaches | About 8 km by road from the Plaza Mayor | On the sand |
| Homes | Town flats and houses | Mainly apartments and townhouses in complexes |
| Rhythm | A working town all year | A holiday coast, busiest in summer |
The town hall describes El Playazo as a reference point for naturism in the Levante, and it is precise about where: naturism has been practised in one very specific area since it began here several decades ago, the northern stretch of El Playazo. Bathers who prefer swimwear use the southern part of El Playazo, Puerto Rey and Las Marinas-Bolaga, and the town presents the arrangement as a free choice made with respect on both sides.
The same page mentions several naturist residential complexes (urbanizaciones naturistas). Whichever way you feel about that, ask how any complex you view describes itself, and what its community rules allow, before you commit.
Vera is growing, and its population is much younger than Mojácar's. INE registered 20,282 residents on 1 January 2025, up from 18,224 three years earlier, and IECA gives an average age of 40.5 with 14.9% of residents over 65; in Mojácar the figures are 50.2 and 30.5%.
Its foreign community is mixed rather than mainly British. IECA counted 6,028 foreign nationals in 2025, about 30% of residents, with Moroccans the largest group at 18.3% of them. At INE's last town-level count, in January 2022, there were 1,019 British nationals against 1,030 Moroccans, 470 Ecuadorians and 450 Romanians.
Buyers are more international than residents. The Notariado's latest figures, as reported in La Voz de Almería on 8 June 2026, show non-residents made 54.01% of recent purchases in Vera, with British, Belgian, Polish, Dutch and German buyers the main nationalities named.
In the notaries' data a buyer is non-resident if not registered as living in Spain. Britons who have already moved here count as residents, so 54.01% is not the same thing as the share of foreign buyers.
Resales dominate. Official housing-ministry transaction counts, republished by IECA, show 1,369 homes sold in Vera in 2025, of which 1,258 were resales and 111 new builds. The land registrars publish prices by province, not by town: across Almería province the average registered sale in the year to June 2026 was €1,416 per square metre.
By road the beaches are about 82–85 km from Almería airport, 108–110 km from Murcia's Corvera airport and about 210 km from Alicante. That puts Vera Playa nearly 20 km closer to Murcia than Mojácar pueblo is.
Distances from El Playazo and Puerto Rey beaches, from OSRM route calculations on OpenStreetMap data, 28 September 2026. Actual journey times depend on traffic and route.
The Murcia option matters in winter. For 2026/27 Almería airport has only its Liverpool and London Gatwick routes (La Voz de Almería, 25 August 2026), whereas Murcia keeps UK services all winter from London's Gatwick, Luton and Stansted as well as Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol, as listed in its Wikipedia route table.
Owning here does not change the limit for British visitors of 90 days in any 180, now logged at the border by the EU Entry/Exit System; how the count works.
Vera itself has one public health centre plus one consultorio (SAS data for 2025, published by IECA). The closest public hospital is La Inmaculada in Huércal-Overa, which has 184 beds: about 26 km by road from Vera town and 34–35 km from the beaches. Torrecárdenas in Almería city, the province's largest, is roughly 90 km from Vera Playa.
How to register for state healthcare once resident, including the S1 route for UK State Pension holders, is set out in the retiring in Spain guide.
Most purchases here are flats or townhouses in shared complexes, so the checks centre on the building, the community and the coast. An independent lawyer should cover them alongside the standard steps in our buying guide.
For the history of irregular building in the province and what AFO status does and does not do, see the Almería property guide; for the town just down the coast, the Mojácar guide. The wider Spanish picture, region by region, is on our Spain property hub.

Talk to us about Spain →Only in part. Vera town hall says naturism has always been practised in one specific area, the northern stretch of El Playazo beach. The southern part of El Playazo, Puerto Rey and Las Marinas-Bolaga are used by bathers in swimwear. There are also naturist residential complexes, so it is worth asking how any complex you view describes itself.
INE's last town-level count, for 1 January 2022, found 1,019 British nationals in Vera out of 18,224 residents. By 2025 the town had 20,282 residents and 6,028 foreign nationals, with Moroccans the largest group, according to IECA. The British feature more strongly among buyers: they are among the main nationalities of non-resident buyers in the notaries' figures.
About 8 km by road from Vera's Plaza Mayor to the beaches at El Playazo or Puerto Rey, based on OpenStreetMap route calculations. The old town sits inland on the plain where it was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1518, while the coast holds the beaches and the apartment and townhouse complexes.
Almería is the nearest, about 82–85 km by road, but its only UK routes for winter 2026/27 are to Liverpool and London Gatwick. Murcia's Corvera airport is about 108–110 km away and keeps UK flights all year from more airports, including Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and Manchester. Alicante airport is about 210 km by road.
Hospital La Inmaculada in Huércal-Overa, a public hospital with 184 beds, about 34–35 km by road from the beaches and 26 km from Vera town. Primary care is local, at Vera's health centre and consultorio. The province's main hospital, Torrecárdenas in Almería city, is roughly 90 km away.
